We (Barbara and Jerry) are members of the MAPS (Mission America Placement Service)
RVers organization. This is a group of retired RVers who travel to an AG approved
project and give the project free labor for a return of full hook-ups. This project
is in Burkesville, Kentucky.....about 60 miles southeast of Bowling Green. The project
is to build a new 400-seat church with Sunday school rooms, kitchen, etc. In addition,
they are also building a school which has 24 students this year. The school is not on
the approved project so the work there is strictly on a volunteer basis.
Some of the RVers have been here since May 4th. Currently, there are 11 rigs with with
14 workers.....some of the women are learning how to do some dry-wall "mudding". So far,
I have done mostly drywalling. This is an all steel building with steel studs so I have
worked a little steel work. There is plenty of drywall to be hung so I will probably
finish my time doing nothing else. However, I have helped hang new doors in the school.
Here are just a few of the photos:
The sign at the Church and School.
The church...all the exterior was basically done before the RVers arrived.
This is most of the group at a Rib-eye steak dinner.
An aerial view of all the RVs.
Jerry ready to go...how about that head covering.
The interior of the church....note the steel studs and beams.
Buster and I on a sissor lift doing some drywalling on the high areas.
One of the miscellaneous jobs I did.....mowing the 4-5 acres.
Barbara and I went to an Amish Orphan Home and here are three of the kids.
These are children of prison women which will be returned once the mothers get out.
The church is currently meeting in a middle school gym until the church
is complete.
